A picture book can... spark a love for reading, reignite a love for reading, be a teacher, friend, role model, help with reading comprehension, illuminate writers to their full potential, provide a mini vacation for free, supplement content area lessons, support english language learners or be just what every human needs. Picture books are important because of how readers interact with them, especially the read-aloud experience. No matter how many awards it may have won or how beautiful the prose or illustrations, an unread picture book collecting dust on a shelf is just paper and cardboard. The magic begins when a child or grown-up reader opens up the book.
