The one thing that I struggle the most with as a ninth-grade teacher is teaching my students to love reading. They used to love reading when they were younger, and some of them still do, but only a very small percentage. As a lover of books and an English teacher, this breaks my heart. I have made it my personal mission to get students to remember what they used to love about reading and for them to rekindle that love. I am a very firm believer that anyone can learn to love reading; you just have to have the right book. The only way that I can do that is to put good books in my students' hands. I spend a lot of time trying to find the right book to match the right student. I want books that students can become engrossed in, can relate to, and can read obsessively, and because I have so many students with so many different interests and levels, I need a lot of books. These books will become a part of my classroom library and will hopefully (as cheesy as it might sound) become a part of my students' worlds. With these books, I hope to instill in each of my students the love of literature that so many of them are missing out on. Not only will these books reignite that love of reading, but also will improve their reading abilities and their vocabulary and their writing skills. Students can learn to write well by reading good writing, and the more they read, the easier reading will become for them. That is all any English teacher really asks for.
