When I am asked about my students, the first thing I think is, "They are great." I teach English and crocheting in a charter school in an underprivileged and under-served city in New Jersey. Despite the challenges they face every day at home and on their way to and from school, they still come to school everyday and challenge themselves to be better than they were the day before. And while many teenagers in their situations tend to be selfish for simple survival reasons, my students are excited to be given opportunities to help others in their community. The school itself, while superior in many ways to the struggling schools in the public school district, does not have the funding that we should in order to be able to support our learners in their educational pursuits. We all do the best we can with what we are given in order to make sure our students have the education they need in order to be competitive with others in college and beyond.
