I am not a stranger to finding creative ways to meet students' needs, but I am somewhat new to flexible seating. I have been teaching for 16 years, but I’m brand new to Kindergarten this year. I have observed several coworkers successfully implement flexible seating with wobble stools in their classrooms and I am excited to jump in and offer them to my students. I’ve already seen how much some of them move in their chairs and they could be so much more comfortable, and ready to learn if they were free to swivel or rock while they listened and shared with the others students they are learning with. We have two child-sized exercise balls, two bouncy cushions, several regular stools and chairs, and some floor and standing options.
What we do not have is anything to answer the problem of students trying to tip their chair forwards or backward and side to side. These students are seeking a certain type of movement as they try to focus which could be provided by wobble stools. These stools will be available to students throughout the day for use at their regular tables, my reading table, and the work counters. I am excited to see how students are able to improve their focus when they are able to move as needed while they learn.
