A deck of cards and the rules of a games such as Hearts or 13 can develop critical thinking skills in a child that has never been challenged to think in this way. I teach a combined 5th an 6th grade elective devoted to teaching low-income students how to play games that challenge them to think mathematically and logically and give them an entertainment resource beyond video games. Rummikub and Othello are great strategic games that encourage students to discover patterns. Scrabble is a classic word game that develops word pattern knowledge. And a deck of cards? Why that's entertainment and brain boosting power in a box!
