Next quarter, our classroom will launch a unit on diversity and inclusivity by creating self-portraits. The portraits will give students an opportunity to reflect deeply on various facets of their identity, beliefs and values. While Crayola renamed their beige-y "flesh" color to "peach" in 1964, it is still widely referred to today as the "skin colored" crayon. The industry's lack of representation not only fails to account for the wide variety of skin tones that exist in our world, but conflates whiteness with normal. In order for my students to create portraits they can truly see themselves in, we need access to culturally responsive art materials. This project includes a classroom supply of "People Colors" crayons, colored pencils and paper. It also includes a mentor text, The Colors of Us by Karen Katz. Thanks to funding from CRUNCH, all donations to this project will be matched x2.
