My class consists of fourteen, young adults who are between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two with moderate to severe disabilities who are learning how to become more independent. Typically, my students are out in the community, working at different job sites, practicing skills that will hopefully, help them get a job and be able to support themselves someday. With the pandemic, our opportunities to develop important job skills have been put on hold. Our school is located in a low socio-economic area of Santa Ana, California, where all of the students are on a free breakfast and lunch program. In addition to daily living and vocational skills, we work on functional academic skills, such as reading safety and community signs, creating shopping lists and using calculators to create budgets. Mastering these important tasks will help them build job skills and eventually find work within their communities.
