Therefore, when introducing my students to read more complex text, I will need to consider their background knowledge, vocabulary development and writing ability. Instructional materials, such as NOOK readers, will provide my students with the opportunity to read text beyond their current grade level to prepare them for the challenges of more complex text. However, complex texts (books or NOOK readers) are not readily available for many of my students once they leave the schoolyard. During conferences at the beginning of the school year, I discovered that a large number my students never talked about joining a book club, attending a reading group, or visiting the neighborhood library. In addition, they were less likely to have reading logs, libraries cards or ever received a reading certificate. Many of them will seldom acknowledge that their lack of skill is at the heart of the reading problem.
