I am hoping that students in my class will have a calm, peaceful place to turn to in times of overwhelming emotion. I will be teaching some students with special needs. These students struggle significantly with high sensory input. When they are struggling, they often shut down, take it out on other students, or both. Please help me provide these and all students with a relaxing space, full of resources to help them face their emotions and return to a calm and focused state. I have stocked this space with other resources, such as play dough and other sensory tools. There is even a phone that they can pick up and use to "talk to their thoughts" so that they can become aware that there exists a separation between their challenging thoughts and the choices that they can make. Students can't learn when their alarm system is going off- when they feel threatened or scared. When students have a place of refuge during these intense, emotional moments, they can more quickly calm down and be ready to learn. Please help me provide this place of refuge for my students. Thank you!
