Ninety percent of my students are on free/reduced lunch. They are mostly Hispanic and many of them are first-generation immigrants. English is often their second language. Reading is not a priority when putting food on the table and maintaining a roof over their heads IS the priority for most of them. As their teacher, my most important task is to instill in them an understanding of how what they are learning today will positively impact their future and that they can do whatever it is they want to.
