Our 22-student classroom is a joyful group 8 and 9 year-olds of all cultural backgrounds. Students speak 10 languages besides English fluently. Our school is located in Silicon Valley, has 850 students, and focuses on technology and supporting our families. 50% of students are low-income and 50% are English Learners. 30% of students are Latino, 30% are Asian, and the rest of the population is a mix of ethnicities. My students are voracious readers. Everyday, my students ask me if they can read for longer than the previous day. Students often borrow books to take home and some even take books out to recess. Our classroom has a strong sense of community. Students are encouraged to discuss ideas with one another, solve their own problems, be leaders, and show kindness and respect to others.
