A "literacy lounge" will provide students with a comfortable area to read each day. In our classroom, students read independently and with partners. Partner reading allows students to support one another in the areas of fluency and comprehension. Equally as important, the students enjoy working collaboratively. Paired reading allows students to strengthen their reading ability but they also learn the importance of listening to one another. Through paired reading, my students have learned the significance of listening to understand rather than listening to respond which is a skill they apply to their everyday lives. The chairs would be advantageous because students will use them to sit together and buddy read. In addition, the area rug will be utilized each day for all subjects. The area rug will provide our class with a common meeting area which will be used on a daily basis throughout all subject areas.
