We are kindergartners at a school where 82% of us qualify for free or reduced lunch. Ours is a Title 1 School which means due to our low-income demographics we receive extra federal funding. As the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction states, "build equity of opportunity for children whose struggles often keep them on the academic sidelines." We are five and six years old, which means this is our first experience in school. We don't even all know how to write our names yet, or hold a pencil. But by the end of the year, we will be reading books and writing pages on our opinions and discoveries. Kindergarten is a very unique and developmental year for us. We require a LOT of supplies. Not only do we blaze through crayons and glue sticks at inhuman speeds, but our developing brains also thrive on the sensory of different craft projects and we need a lot of hands-on materials in math and literacy. Things can get very pricey for our teacher... but we are worth it!
