As fourth graders, we really dig into vocabulary using a dictionary and a thesaurus. Students must be adept at using both references to understand words and locate what we call WOW words which they must include in their writing! I was able to update our thesaurus collection last year thanks to a great sale at Target. However, I have not been so lucky with student dictionaries. The dictionaries that we currently have in the classroom are older than I am, and I am no spring chicken. The age of the dictionaries prevents students from being exposed to inappropriate language; however, it also does not contain modern words.
