My dream is to provide a literacy area in my classroom where my students can build knowledge while practicing the skills to become lifelong learners. All students can succeed when given the opportunity to pair quality instruction with classroom experiences that bridge what they have been taught with chances to spark curiosity within academic pursuits. Envision with me: a comfy and colorful carpet area for those who want to lie down while enjoying a good book. Sturdy, organized bookshelves with bright blue bins that hold multiple genres of new reading materials that all second graders can access. Flexible seating options for those kiddos who need a little wiggle, and a few STEM hands-on materials to apply what they have learned from their nonfiction reading. For flexible seating students can choose from wobble chairs and cushions, while STEM activities include design and build blocks and engineering centers.
As a teacher in rural Butte County, California, my students are challenged with more adverse situations than what is normal for 7- and 8-year-olds. They have little opportunity to visit the public library. In many homes, my students lack age appropriate materials to practice reading. This literacy area will give my students a place to grow as learners and readers.
