The 6th Grade Science curriculum in New Mexico is structured around 'Earth History' and 'Geoscience'. Our units throughout the year will touch on rock types, geological time, formation of the Earth, and other similar subjects. One that is particularly interesting to me (and to my students!) is the unit on FOSSILS. We love looking at dead things in rock. However, the textbooks and accompanying materials emphasize the role of men in the field of paleontology. I want my students to learn about and be inspired by a woman, Mary Anning, who helped to pave the way for future paleontologists. Not only did she come from a low to middle class background, but she was derided by society for her unladylike pursuits. I want my students to read about her the entire time they are working with fossils (since I teach 6th grade elementary, I can incorporate the books into my ELA lessons, and the graphing [facilitated by the Expo markers & graphing boards] about fossil statistics & women in science into mathematics). Although it's important to learn this information in general, I want my female students (who make up more than half the class) to be able to see themselves in the scientists that contributed to the field that we spend weeks talking about. Our region is rich in fossils and geological history, and I'd love to have Mary Anning's story inspire them to perhaps take their interest in fossils and turn it into a productive, rewarding career.
