This year my class and I are focusing on building fluency in reading and math. Kindergarten provides the foundational skills needed to be successful in developing proficient readers and mathematicians. In order to build fluency in reading and math, students need to be encouraged to meet their classroom goals.
These incentives will provide encouragement to students to do better each day and attain the ultimate goal, which is a reward for their fluency achievements in reading and math. The Play-doh, watercolor paint set, animal erasers, sharpeners, and flexible soft pencils are items of interest to the students. Some of these students do not have the basic writing utensils. In addition, there are some students that do not have support at home, making it difficult for them to practice fluency skills at home.
School tends to be the only place my students are able to practice the foundational skills needed to become profient readers and mathematicians. By providing students with incentives of interest, they will be encouraged to be more attentive and try their best.
