I strongly believe that mentor texts are a must-have for teaching any skill or concept, especially social skills. To fully learn a concept, students need multiple exposures to content presented in a variety of ways. Picture books about emotion and social-emotional issues can help kids think deeply about feelings and social issues. My students participate in daily social skills groups to work on learning social skills and emotional regulation. These books will be used during these social skills groups to teach self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. My students are all working on being able to be out in the mainstream setting and need all the supports they can get to help them learn basic social skills and how to regulate and control their emotions.
