Our suburban public lower elementary school recognizes the importance of developing confident readers and writers at even the youngest ages. My second graders are inspired to write! They are in a transition between picture books and chapter books and are just beginning to learn about their own personal reading preferences. As they read a broader variety of fiction and nonfiction books, they are also learning to recognize traits of good writing. They begin to connect to and imitate the writing styles of their favorite authors through their own personal stories. Their thoughts, emotions, and sense of humor begin to shine as they develop their own writing voice.
