My students are a lively bunch of five and six-year olds. They are eager to learn. These emergent readers need age appropriate literature in order to become successful, independent readers. Unfortunately, 98% of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch which indicates that those students are also highly impoverished. This is just a glimpse of the socio-economic status of the entire student body. This disturbing data along with education budget cuts means that my students lack quality resources that are vital to their academic success.
