I teach a Pre-k/kindergarten early intervention classroom designed for students with a primary diagnosis of autism. We are a Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) based classroom (ABA is evidence-based techniques & principles to bring about meaningful & positive change in behavior. We create a language-rich environment and all students receive speech and language therapy weekly. Autism is a language based disability. The inability to communicate has a significant impact on the quality of life, educational access, development of social relationships, & frustration from not being able to communicate and can lead to challenging behaviors. When a child has a severe speech or language delay or deficits, Augmentative and Alternative Communication strategies provide them with a way to express themselves. Giving students an alternative means of communication, besides verbal speech, is a huge area of need for my students.
