Children often have a naturally whimsical and curious approach to reading. They are excited to explore their creative side when we read about magical creatures and make-believe lands. They “oooh” and “ahhh” and gasp and giggle when we read stories about children, families, and animals. They listen with fascination and amazement as we read interesting facts about the world around them. In kindergarten, we love to read! I want to encourage my little readers to become lifelong learners by giving them access to a diverse and inclusive library that features a variety of races, cultures, and groups of people. Unfortunately, literacy curricula often do not provide the books necessary to teach students about differences. Children love to see themselves in books. When they can identify with the characters from their favorite stories, their fondness for reading and their enthusiasm towards learning grows tremendously. I hope to uplift and inspire my students by reading them stories that highlight people like them. My book selection focuses on many important differences that my students experience. I have chosen books that depict accurate portrayals of historical events and figures, celebrate people of all races and cultures, picture families of all types, teach acceptance of different orientations, educate about inclusive words and actions, encourage bravery and kindness, and understand mental health and emotional regulation. Please help me build a library fit for our future big leaders!
