My students need engaging math mentor texts to hook them into the new subject matter. Each of the books that I have selected, for example Full House: An Invitation to Fractions, tie into a math unit that my students will have. My school is focusing on reading as one of our school wide goals for this year, so linking reading into our math curriculum helps to achieve that goal. DynaMath is a great tool to link reading and math together, the articles are relevant and provide students will real life examples of using math in the 'real world'. Students often say that 'math is their favorite' and 'reading is boring' so providing them with real life examples in the magazine articles which incorporate reading and math will provide my students with a cross-curricular education. Providing my students with hands on activities and the use of manipulatives allows me to scaffold the learning to tailor to their needs. With the use of a laminator I will be able to create learning activities and games that will last through the year that my students can come back to when they need to review a math skill. The Fraction Tower Cubes will allow my students to create and compare fractions in a way that is concrete and not abstract.
