Our ELL program functions differently than many programs because it works in a K-12 setting. There are close to 40 students of varying grade levels and proficiency levels. Sometimes there are students who are new-to-country and just beginning to learn English in the same group as students who are at a more advanced level just because of time and scheduling constraints. So, our staff has to be very creative in order to meet all the needs of the students. We need headphones with microphones to allow students to work independently on listening and speaking activities. This means that the EL teacher can differentiate within the group and much more easily meet the needs of individual students. How does this play out? One example from our current program: The 5th grade group has three students that come for 30 minutes; one student is new-to-country and knows very little English, a second student is at an intermediate level but still learning, the third student is advanced and almost ready to exit the program but needs to work specifically on writing. With all the varied needs, it is difficult to craft one lesson that works for all three students. With the headphones, one student can be doing interactive listening and speaking exercises on their Chromebook, another can be recording their short story on FlipGrid to assess their speaking. That leaves the teacher to be able to work with the third student. The teacher can then individualize the instruction and split the time with the students, ensuring that each is still getting what the need and being productive with the time.
