In my school we are trying to teach students about recycling. This integrates aspects of math, science and the social sciences. Students can learn about the technical side of the recycling process while they also learn about the impact of recycling programs on the beautification of a community. Students learn about the impact of trash accumulation on our environment. Students become involved in helping their communities not only in the present, but for years to come into the future. Students also learn the simple values of responsibility and reliability while they collect recycling throughout the school and community. A group of advanced students and a group of students with autism will join together to be responsible for collecting recyclable items throughout the school. Students will go around to each classroom to empty recycling bins into a larger recycling container. Once a week the students will bring the larger recycling containers to the curb for the city-wide recycling pickup. We are asking for funding for recycling containers that will be placed in each teacher's classroom in our school. In addition to all of the academic skills that will be emphasized through this recycling program, this recycling club will learn important social skills that are necessary for their current development.
