I work with students in grades 6-12 in a district that serves 23,670 students, with 83.9% living in low-income situations and 88.9% of our families qualifying as high needs. I support social/emotional, social skills, and habits of work development through a Community Action Through The Arts (CATTA) class and individualized coaching at various points during the school day. The CATTA classes center our work through activities aimed at improving a wide variety of community needs, both in our school and within the City of Springfield. As a special education teacher and department chair, I support English instruction for grades 6-8 students and also consult with all staff on best practices, modifying instruction, and providing appropriate modifications, accommodations and services for all students, particularly those with IEP or 504 plans.
