My first grade students are very bright active learners who thirst for knowledge. My class is one third Hispanic and more than 50% of my students receive free or reduced lunches due to family income. Our school is located in rural Alabama, and like most other rural schools we have been hit hard by the recession. Our teachers receive no funding for classroom needs, and many teachers end up spending hundreds out of their own pockets for classroom needs.
