My class consists of 16 first grade students. They attend a Title I school which means 76% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. We live in a very rural community in East Tennessee where very few local jobs are available. Parents must drive a minimum of 30 minutes to work each day for a job with benefits. I receive very few classroom funds; none in a sizable amount that would allow me to purchase a large item. So as a classroom teacher, I spend several hundred dollars from my own pocket each year in order to buy things my students need.
