Our school is very diverse culturally, racially, and economically. Many of my students speak more than one language. We stress the importance of tolerance and respect through our class meetings as well as our curricular focuses. We are a a public school using the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. We use an inquiry-based approach allowing the students to learn and show their understandings in a variety of ways, including drawing as well as writing and speaking. We emphasize looking critically at art as well as texts and have students use the routines of seeing, thinking, and wondering in both. These practices deepen their questioning skills. In our classroom students show what they know in a variety of ways. They develop an understanding that there are many ways to solve a problem and to express ideas. They work collaboratively, learning to respect the ideas of others.
