The lovable children in my 4th grade class are each one of a kind. They demonstrate responsibility more than a 9-10 year old should, in addition to a level of sass and attitude, which we are working on maintaining respectful levels of both! Where my students come from, they don't often get the opportunity to engage in many educational, real life or hands-on activities. Their idea of the "real world" consists of babysitting younger siblings while home alone, unable to ask their native language speaking parent for homework help. They go to bed on their own while mom is at work late or even overnight. They focus on the necessities of living rather than fun and games. The poverty stricken, low socio-economic status of the families in my school's neighborhood is a truly sad sight. These kids deserve to feel safe, happy and comfortable while engaged in learning strategies to improve their abilities to communicate. "Yo, ya hear what Im sayin'?"
