After teaching special education for 9 years, I will begin my first year as a general education teacher in Fall 2018. I will be remaining at Claxton Middle School, but I am transferring to the English Language Arts department where I will be teaching 6th and 7th grade ELA. One of our school improvement goals is to strengthen the literacy of our students. In route to meeting this goal, I find it critical to be sure that all students I work with, regardless of their past experiences with reading, find texts with which they can engage in and connect with. Claxton Middle School is about 50 miles west of Savannah, GA in rural Claxton, GA, Evans County. We are a Title 1 School, and 100% of students county wide receive free lunch due to the overwhelming economic needs within Evans County. CMS is about 35% African American, 35% Caucasian, 25% Hispanic, and 5% mixed race or other.
