This projected started because a large amount of fabric was being given away. This frugal social worker couldn't just let the material go to waste. Our Peer to Peer group began brainstorming on how to put this material to use. One of our students with autism uses a weighted neck wrap and we began to build off of that. This project is two-fold. High school students with autism and their peers will work together to make weighted lap pads/blankets/neck weights for elementary students with sensory challenges. While the high school students will benefit from learning some basic sewing skills, teamwork, fun and new formed relationships, the elementary students will obtain a product to help calm them. We will use sewing machines to make the fabric outline of our weighted lap pads. The rice is what makes the lap pads weighted and safe for our little ones.
