My goal is to offer many more options for students to read independently in and outside of the classroom, and to encourage critical thinking and discussions about how we humans can peacefully and compassionately coexist in our various communities. Research has shown that choice greatly enhances student engagement in reading. In these times, it's paramount for them to have book choices available that show a range of main characters, settings, experiences -- most especially now, with our growing awareness of marginalized groups being under-represented and misunderstood. My classroom library needs revamping! Former students have shown great interest in books about issues of hardship (REFUGEE; A LONG WALK TO WATER), social injustice (LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY, THE BOOK THIEF) as well as other current issues that help them learn about lives beyond their central Maine experience. I want to build on those interests by offering more current titles, and an array of genres and levels of access. Lastly, I need to replace alternate reading seating (floor pillows and cushions) with easy to wash beanbag chairs, as per CDC recommendations. Alternate seating often helps any number of students settle in and engage in daily reading expectations. I am hugely motivated to upgrade my classroom library. This project will do much to inspire discussion and help my students make meaning of what's going on in the world.
