Having a special space to sit when we gather at the carpet makes learning fun and inviting. With our existing old and extremely small carpet my students have a difficult time finding their “own personal special space” on the carpet with many having to sit outside of the carpet perimeter. Having a carpet with brightly colored squares will give each child their own personal space. As a special education teacher, my students are easily distracted and have a difficult time paying attention. I have several developmentally delayed, learning disabled, oppositional defiance disorder and autistic students. Whole group can be the toughest part of their day. By creating their individual space, my hope is to strengthen their ability to become more focused on the carpet. By allowing my students to "own" a square for the school year, it will teach them responsibility, independence, and hopefully help create a distraction-free environment!
