I have a very diverse group of children. At the beginning of the year some cannot write their name or have any concept of letters while others may be close to reading. The expectations in Kindergarten are that all children should come out with letters, sounds, and beginning reading skills. However with budget cuts I find I have less to work with every year and more challenges. Many of my children are from single families and parents who are overwhelmed with their own personal lives that they don't know where to start to help their child at home. I encourage parent volunteers in my room so that I can give more individualized help. I don't have the luxury of a classroom assistant. My Kindergarten is also half time so I must make every minute count in such a short time. Kindergarten is the start of their school experience and I want all of my children to love coming and to love learning. 5 and 6 year old children are so much fun to teach!
