A big part of moving towards an appreciation for the magic actors can make onstage using just music, our bodies, and our imaginations starts with discovering the strength and power we already possess. Studying yoga helps my students have a greater connection to their bodies: both how they work and how they function in space. It helps them have a greater connection to those around them as they develop awareness that shows how their individual movements fit into and unify the whole group. We use our yoga practice as the foundation for the mutual consent that informs all our other movement work throughout the year. Yoga teaches students the valuable lesson of how to create calm in their minds and bodies in the midst of a chaotic and overwhelming world. Throughout the year, when I can sense my students are tense or when SATs and college deadlines approach, I return to yoga and meditation with them to encourage self-regulation and self-reflection. Yoga mats will help ensure that my students can practice yoga in a safe, clean environment. Yoga blocks will help students ease into more challenging poses as they unleash the full potential of their own strength.
