My students have often experienced a lot of trauma in their personal lives. Due to the color of their skin, they also have to contend with discrimination on a daily basis. But they are so much more than this, they are amazing, talented, resourceful human beings who exhibit so much empathy for each other, you sometime wonder where they get so much strength and resiliency from. It has been the ultimate privilege to teach this group of students, they are largely from immigrant families who have taught their children to rise above. The school's mascot is a phoenix and it perfectly suits the spirit of my students. Our school is a special model that should be replicated more often, my students are in a program where they actually take college classes in high school and many of them will graduate with a high school diploma and an Associates Degree.
