I work in a building of 400 students, with a poverty rate of 72%. In addition to our general education classrooms, our building serves 52 English Language Learners and 68 special education students with Individual Education Plans. The majority of our students live in low income or subsidized housing. We have many students who may be from single parent homes and/or are being raised by grandparents/extended family. In many cases students are left on their own. We serve an average of 250 breakfasts to many students who have not had food since the day before when they ate at school. The students in our building crave adult interactions and attention in a variety of school environments.
