We are a Title 1 school with 97% of the students on free and reduced lunch. These students live in single parent family homes or are homeless. They live in extended/foster families or in motels. They lack communication skills and vocabulary. They also lack knowledge about how we get food and importance of food. In order for my students to learn about food, I use interactive technology to demonstrate importance of a healthy breakfast, the “most important meal of the day.” As students research importance of good food & how to prepare it, they use strategies taught in reading, math & science. Without these strategies, they would not be able to read a recipe or follow directions to prepare the food. Internet usage can be challenging as it depends whether the laptop will function appropriately while downloading the Internet resources. With the use of a laptop, my students will experience life skills like safe food handling and basic food preparation.
