The fifth graders at my school already spend 70% more time at school than the average student because they are a part of a program whose mission is to close the achievement gap for low-income children. They have classes until 5PM; they come to school on Saturdays and over the summer. They know that there is no shortcut to student achievement. It simply takes hard work. In my three math classes, this hard work moves 90 students, who enter the fifth grade averaging in the 16th percentile on the national SAT 10 exam, to the 75th percentile after just one school year.
