My 5th graders are in a Title One School in Maine. This means that many of my students receive free lunch. It also means that many of my students come from deeply impoverished homes. For some, school is the only safe space they experience. There is a high number of single parent homes and the Opioid crisis in high in our area, as is unemployment. My students want to learn! They just need help feeling that school is the place where they are safe; physically, emotionally and socially. Before we tackle these obstacles, it's a challenge to tackle the academics.
