I have students ranging from 1st grade through 6th grade. The majority of these are reluctant readers or at least used to be. By their intermediate years, many of my students have built enough fluency to tackle the challenge of reading novels, albeit slowly for some. The miracle happens for them when they continue reading daily and finally finish their first novel. Like magic, something seems to just click for many of them. They learn to love reading and they want to read all the books in the series. The best part for me is seeing a kid who used to regularly read at 70 words per minute and not so accurately, evolve into someone who can read upwards of 150 words per minute and very accurately, just because they got in the practice. There are a few who just decide they don't like reading, but those are the exception. I am quite pleased that nearly nine out of ten seem to develop a lifetime love of reading.
