My ELD students come from diverse backgrounds, languages, and challenges. Many of these students are those adolescents who struggle to learn a new language, culture, and school environment, while battling the daily struggles of being a teenager. Others are students who were born in the United States but never acquired the language skills to allow them to move into mainstream classes. While learning language is innately challenging, my ELD students face the added burden of poverty, violence, and minimal resources. They all are very capable of learning, but need structured support, a caring heart, and non-traditional learning strategies to inspire them to share their stories in an environment that can be quite harsh and unforgiving. My ELD students also face the added burden of not having access to adequate technology and need improved technological literacy. With improvements in technology, I believe students will be inspired to work harder to share their stories and improve.
