Reading is the key to educational success. Numerous research studies have shown that students who read early and often outperform their peers in all areas. Research has also shown that students who do not develop strong reading comprehension skills are unlikely to perform at grade level in any other subject area. This knowledge has ignited my passion for teaching all students to read proficiently by third grade, regardless of the risk factors which might indicate that this will be difficult for some to accomplish. As a reading interventionist it is my job to effectively teach those students who are not making adequate progress in their regular classroom and small group setting. Often these students have begun to see themselves as a failure in the school setting and I cannot allow this to happen! Our school serves a diverse population of families, over 90% of whom are below poverty level. My students work hard and want to improve their futures along with those of their family.
