My class is made up of 18 fun-loving, learning-hungry children. They come from very diverse backgrounds that make them who they are. Most of my students did not have the opportunity to attend a pre-k class. Kindergarten is their first school experience. Kindergarten today is not what it was 10 or 20 years ago. Today's kindergartners are expected to do what 1st graders used to do. There is so much academic pressure for them to be reading by the end of kindergarten. A hands-on approach to learning is a fun and engaging way to make this happen. At our school, 92% of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Many have never held a pencil or cut paper when they enter the classroom on that first day of school. It is my job to ensure that they learn in a safe, engaging environment so they can reach their full potential.
