How many of you were inspired to learn Japanese just because Naruto (anime) is so cool? Those are my students. Although our school is located in Los Angeles, where we can find Japanese markets and sushi restaurants nearby, it isn't easy to find opportunity to practice speaking Japanese everyday outside the classroom. We are on a block schedule where we only meet 3 times a week. Not to mention that we have no language lab, and my students spend a couple hours on a bus commuting to school, this environment is far from ideal daily practice. Japanese learners at this school are diverse. There are not only heritage speakers but also mostly non-native speakers, who were inspired by watching Anime, reading Manga or simply fascinated by a Japanese culture.
