My school is located in the inner city. We are not the largest school district in Texas, but we have similar problems with literacy as the larger school districts do. My students are strong, and they have great potential, but they often lack support from parents and the society around them. This year, I have noticed an increase in reading self efficacy and motivation. The school they attend has a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. Most of my students walk to school encountering situations on their neighborhood that they should not be exposed to. My students work hard when clear modeled expectations are set and deep down they understand that the responsibility of learning is ultimately theirs.
