I have a group of amazingly talented young adults who I have had the privilege of working with since last year. I looped with my students from 4th grade, which means I kept my entire class of 28 kids, and I added 4 new students this year for a powerhouse team of 32 5th graders. I couldn't have been more fortunate to be working with a more unique, gifted, and passionate group of leaders. I put everything into my practice, and my students rise to my high level of rigor every time. My students' families come from the most impoverished area in Northern California where having the feeling of safety is not a given. However, every day they strive to improve themselves to increase their options and opportunities for the future. All of my students' test scores have risen dramatically the past year, and the ceiling has now been raised even higher now. My students attend a reading first school where 75% of the children are English learners and about 100% qualify for a free reduced lunch.
