Theater class involves practicing improvisation, developing the imagination, and strengthening the voice & body. There is a lot of moving around. Theater class in a virtual environment is not ideal, but we are making the best of it! This project is aimed at developing the students' improvisation skills and their ability to think creatively. Viola Spolin is the master of classroom improvisation ideas, and her book emphasizes how students can work alone and still be effective actors. The resources in this project will allow me to communicate and teach improvisation in this virtual environment so that the students will be able to transfer those skills to the classroom and the stage when we come back to in-person learning. These materials will help my students by allowing me to move around doing physical warm-ups and vocal exercises with them in the virtual classroom, to share texts with them that we use in person, and to make their learning from home as complete as it is in the classroom. I have been teaching for a long time, but never this way! I am learning as much as the kids about how to use this technology! Old dogs can learn new tricks!!!! These students spend their four years together as "majors", and in this virtual environment, I want them to have the same experiences as every other student before them. Being at home since March, 2020, they feel isolated but ready to learn with their classmates. I want them involved in class and ready to return to school "in real life" without feeling that they have lost any more! As we say in theater, "the show must go on!"
