I teach in an extremely low income city in Massachusetts. Most of my students do not own any books. Our city is full of poverty, violence, drugs, gangs, and other things that children should never have to be exposed to. Learning English and getting used to the United States is a big enough task for 3rd graders. They desperately need inspiration for life and learning. I incorporate lots of media to get them excited about learning. They really need to be more excited about learning from books! Our old reading program did not allow for this. They are very excited to start our new reading program and be able to choose their own books! These kids have bigger hearts and more imagination that you could imagine after seeing the community they live in. They deserve more than our school district and my paycheck can give them. They do not take things for granted, and appreciate the smallest things that are given to them.
